Coffee W/ Rach (Christmas Edition)

Merry Christmas everyone! If you happened to miss the last Coffee w/ Rach, this is a series where I answer questions from y’all in a blog post as well as sharing a little life update at the end. This is a fun way for me to interact with y’all, and for y’all to get to know me a little more. Questions from you guys!

Q: How do you drink your coffee at home? Do you have a fave creamer? I want a holiday one!

A: While I’m at home I love to drink my coffee hot when I can sit and drink it slowly. But if I’m on the road driving my commute to work I always drink this Starbucks iced coffee (unsweetened medium roast), along with my all time favorite creamer here (Natural Bliss vanilla almond milk creamer). It’s super easy to make and tastes so good! I just pour it in my Yeti cup over ice and go! I’m not really one for holidays creamers.. If I get a holiday drink I’ll usually get one from a coffee shop! If you have any suggestions for good holiday creamers, let ya girl know. I’m just not a fan of peppermint mocha 🙂

Q: You’re always on the go… How do you plan meals/eat healthy around that? Besides the occasional Taco Bell.

A: First off, I love that y’all get my love for taco bell! This has actually been a struggle of mine to figure out since Blake and I have moved. I will go to the grocery store once a week to buy what we need for the week. At this point I have to figure out what days we are going to eat at home and what days we will be eating out. Sadly we do eat out more than we would like and want to get better about that this year. But we are both so busy and also really love food so we like to indulge occasionally (or more than occasionally). Friday nights we always go out to eat, no matter what. The other days we eat out are random and depends on our schedule. We try to make it a goal to eat at home during the week. We will cook healthy meals when at home and make extra for us both to take for lunch the next day! If we don’t have time to make a meal during the week we will pick up something quick and “healthy” like Zoeys Kitchen, Chipotle, or my fav- Pho 🙂 I try to keep my Taco Bell intake to a minimum… but it’s the best treat after a bad day haha.

Q: What is your current favorite foundation?

A: I have gone back to using the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation! This is an old favorite of mine and I decided to go back to it because it lasts all day long. When I’m in the salon around blow driers and hot irons all day, can take a toll on your makeup! I do my makeup at 6:30 every morning and it looks the exact same when I leave work that afternoon! I also love the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Creme foundation. This one has a gorgeous luminous finish, but doesn’t last as long. I will wear it on special occasions!

Q: What did you get your mom for Christmas?

A: I got my mom this casual jacket in black to wear to and from the gym, or running errands in casual workout clothes! She wanted a casual jacket so I thought this was perfect. I also got her this Loccitane gift set. They make the perfect gifts! If you are looking for any last minute suggestions.. You can never go wrong with a good pair of Ugg slippers. It’s one of those gifts that you don’t want to buy for yourself, but LOVE them when you get them as a gift. I actually got a pair for my Gigi this Christmas! Q: How much maintenance does a balayage require? I have never dyed my hair because I like my natural dirty blonde color, but am ready for a change and really want some pretty blonde accents in my hair! However, keeping up with it financially and time wise as a college student make me a bit nervous!

A: You are the perfect candidate for some balayage! The great thing about it is that it doesn’t ever NEED to be touched up if you don’t want to or have the time/money to. What I suggest to my clients who are low maintenance but want to keep up with it to come every 6 months to get it touched up. That is only twice a year which isn’t too bad at all! If anyone comes back sooner than that it’s probably because they want to make it brighter, they like to maintain it closer to the roots, or they just want to hangout with me 🙂 Jk, jk… I would totally suggest it for a college girl on a budget!

Q: I’ve noticed from getting to know you on a personal level and also from being an outsider perpective- you’re a very positive person. What keeps you motivated/in a positive mindset when things might not be going as you wanted? What tips can you give to help motivate the daily grind for us who live a busy body life?

A: This was a questions I got from a client who I got to know through doing her hair, and she follows my blog! I took this as such a sweet compliment. Anyone can compliment my outfit, but when I get a compliment about my character it means 1,000x more to me. I strive to live a positive life as well as being a positive influence on others. Always remember to accept the bad, but embrace the good. We can’t control the bad things that happen in our lives or throughout our day. I’ve learned that it is best to accept the bad, deal with it, then move on. Don’t fret over the things that cannot be changed. Put that energy into the things that bring positivity to your life! For me that is God, Blake, my family & friends, and the goals I have for myself in this life. Positivity is a choice that only you can make. Motivation for the busy body- Take a moment to breathe/vent, then grab yourself a coffee, get back to your grind and get.shit.done. I strongly believe that coffee is liquid motivation. Q: What does a day in the busy life of Rachel look like?

A: Oh gosh everyday is so different for me! I commute to work 4 days a week so I’ll walk you through one of those days. I try to wakeup at 6:15 (usually ends up being 6:30), then do my morning routine (skin care, makeup, hair, get dressed). I will then go downstairs to make my coffee (to-go as always on a commute day) and grab my breakfast and head out the door by 7:45. My first client typically starts at 9:00, so I try to get there by 8:45. Work till about 4:00 then head home to get there around 5:00. Orange  Theory workout class starts at 5:30 so I have about 15 minutes to get dressed, and make my pre-workout (I need that extra boost after driving and working all day) before I need to leave. I get out of class by 6:30 and head back home to make dinner! This is when I get to spend time with Blake. After we eat we will watch a couple Netflix episodes or a movie. Then I go up stairs for my night routine. In between all of this I try to work on blog stuff! This is the schedule I try to go by 4 days out of my week if everything is running smoothly which let be honest.. is 50% of the time for me haha. The other 3 days are all over the place! I cherish my Mondays because I have them off and can usually do whatever the hell I want those days. That’s when I run all my errands!

Q: How do you entertain yourself during your commute to work?

A: I absolutely LOVE music and make different types of playlists on Spotify all the time. But I have recently discovered Audible! It’s basically books on tape that you can listen to through an app on your phone. Lately, I’ve been listening to a new favorite book- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. It’s not about not giving a crap about anything, but what what you prioritize to give a crap about. It’s a brutally honest self help book that can be a little inappropriate (hints the language in the title), but it’s amazing. You can buy it on audible, or as a book! Life Update:

I am currently in Branson Missouri, with Blake and our dogs visiting my in laws for the holidays! We drove 10 hours through the night last night to get here so I’m running on about 2 hours of sleep.. It’s so hard for me to sleep past 8:00 anymore, no matter how much sleep I get the night before! Does this mean I’m getting old? I’m drinking coffee on their beautiful porch enjoying the cold weather and view of the lake. I mentioned in my last Coffee w/ Rach that they built a house on Table Rock Lake and are living their dream retirement! Blake and I are so used to having both our parents in the same town. This is the first year we had to split the holidays up! We did Thanksgiving with mine, Christmas with his, then will switch off from here on out. Even though I’m kind of sad that it is my first Christmas with out my family, I’m so happy to spend time with my in laws because we don’t get to see them as much and miss them a whole lot! Every detail of their house is so beautiful, and even more so decorated for Christmas. My father in law is such a handy man (no really I think he can build anything), and has done such a great job with the house and some of the furniture inside the house. I told Blake he needs to start taking some pointers haha.

This holiday season has felt a little different this year for me. I’m learning to be more sensitive to other people’s situations during this time of year, and I’m learning how selfish I’ve been during the holidays in the past. Usually, I know exactly what I want for Christmas and I meticulously plan out how I’m going to get the things that I want (OMG this makes me sound like a total B). But this year people have had to force me to think of things that I want. Then I feel guilty for having to come up with things that I want, when others have so little. Because obviously if you have to think really hard about what you want, you really don’t need anything. Don’t get me wrong.. I love gifts! But the older I get, the more they don’t matter to me as much. There are times that I really wish Santa was real so all kids (if they’re good of course) could get gifts for Christmas no matter what their home for financial situation is like. It’s so easy to get caught up in the craziness that the holidays bring. Finding the perfect gifts for people in your life (and if you’re like me you end up spending way too much), holiday parties, getting your house decorated and ready for guests, arguing over who’s house your going to be celebrating at… This my friends, is where we start to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is about a love so great that the Lord sent his only son to be born on earth by a virgin in a manger, to one day die for our sins. There is absolutely no greater gift that we can ever receive than this. This love is something that is so hard to comprehend, but so important to remember this time of the year. Remember to take time this season to be still and soak in all of the love and joy around you, and to never forget the true meaning of the season!

As most of you know, Blake and I live in the Houston area. The holiday season is going to be very different for a lot of Texans this year. There are so many people who are still dealing with loss from Hurricane Harvey. We have friends and family who have both been devastatingly affected, and will not be in their homes for Christmas. Our church put together this video together that truly touched my heart, and will hopefully encourage you to spread some joy to people in your lives or community that aren’t as excited for the holiday season this year.
